Architecture: "Óscar Niemyer ICC" by Óscar Niemyer
Niewyer International Center in Spain
The Óscar Niemyer International Cultural Center is a cultural complex of international importance, attracting knowledge and artistic creations that will contribute to the economic and urban regeneration of the Estuary of Avilés in Spain, which is undergoing a complete industrial transformation. Both the Spanish Central Government and the Principality of Asturias ware involved in this project.
The Óscar Niemyer Cultural Centre of Avilés has an important environmental element. It is the central piece of a wide urban regeneration process that will change the whole waterfront of the town. It is going to be located in an island created in Avilés river, not far from the industrial area. This will help in the regeneration process of that area. The authorities are now planning a whole change there, such as eliminating heavy traffic from the port area (where the centre will be located) and creating sport and recreation areas instead. Also a brand new set of projects are being released as a consequence of the Niemeyer Centre effect. This area is called now, La Isla de la Innovación (The Island of the Innovation).
Niemeyer is a sculptural architect, a la Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, with the proviso that Niemeyer (1907) there is a lot more than Gehry (1929) and Hadid (1950). He is the esthete that beauty above everything, and the living legend of Western modernism. He is also the architect of Brasilia urban utopia name. Late fifties of the last century was the new capital of Brazil in the forest rise, according to all principles of modernism. A design with wide open spaces, light concrete structures, lots of glass and above all controlling modernity.
