Award for Wonderkamers by Kiss the Frog and Kossman de Jong
Wonder Rooms Wins International Design and Communication Award
Wonderkamers has won an International Design and Communication Award. The Gemeentemuseum won the prize in the category ‘Best Scenography for a permanent collection. Responsible for the exhibition design is Kiss the Frog and Kossmann.dejong. The awards reward innovative communication, design and branding strategies in the international museum world. The museum is honoured with the award. Benno Tempel: “Wonder Rooms is unique in Europe and gives a new dimension to the traditional museum visits. Design and new media play an important role.”
Wonder Rooms is an exhibition packed with art and interactive technology. Children are with their parents or family, are introduced with art, crafts, architecture and fashion. Visitors get a tablet as a duo that leads them through the “Wonder Rooms” and a playful and (inter-) actively on various aspects of the collection of the museum.
This mix of art, do-it-yourself, the newest digital technology and the fact that children can go in for free, proved a successful formula to bring the permanent collection of the museum under the attention of the youngest generation.
Director Benno Tempel speaks of a true museum revolution. “Where in the world take the children their parents to the museum, then they want to keep coming back and many times? Hours” Temple is also pleased that families remain in the museum longer. This is often because the kids want then in the museum. Temple: “If you have just your own Mondrian made on a touchscreen, you surely want to see the real thing
Since its reopening of Wonderkamers the exhibition gets a lot of credit. This spring, the museum won already the SPIN Award and a Highly Commended certificate ‘at the British Museum + Heritage Awards and an Honorable Mention at the Museum Next Awards. Wonderkamer was also nominated for an Cinekid Award. Since its reopening in 2013. 12,000 families and children visited the exhibition.
